As this year’s University Season descends upon cities across the UK, online grocer Approved Food has revealed the shopping patterns of first year students compared to those of their “worried” parents’ during preparations for their first move away from home.

The discount retailer, based in Sheffield, one of the UK’s largest student cities, has surveyed the shopping habits and highlighted the top items, purchased by the nation’s freshers as they prepare for independent living compared to the choices made by their parents.

Top five from the list as the students fend for themselves with parents out of sight is fizzy drinks (packs of six) followed closely by; tea bags, beer (on average 4 cans), noodles and chocolate treats – totting up to approximately £6 for the basic bundle.

The parents, however, filled their leaving home parcel with; spaghetti, pasta sauce, toilet rolls, tea bags and a significant amount of cleaning products – about £5 for their chosen essentials.

A key trend picked up by the grocer indicated that student taste buds are moulding to a more cosmopolitan palette, buying in items such as sauces, spices and key components for dishes across the globe. Whereas parents are sticking to home comforts, biscuits and good old British snacks that students’ can enjoy in new found independence – calling Approved Food to ask if today’s student generation is healthier and maybe savvier than parents give them credit for?

Founder of Approved Food Dan Cluderay said: “I’ve built the company to provide for everyone and anyone. In the build up to freshers week it has been clear to see the surprising – and not so surprising – choices that students and their parents are making for our ready-to-take boxes.

“There are a record number of students off to university this year, with over 400,000 taking places across the UK. Heading off to a new city and setting up home alone doesn’t come cheap – but whatever the choices our discounted stock offers a low-cost alternative to supermarket shops for students and parents alike.”

Approved Food has over a quarter of a million customers across the UK and specialises in selling surplus stock, some of which is nearing or past its best before date. The grocer, popular with families, students and everyone in between, provides an alternative route to market for suppliers, manufacturers, supermarkets and distributors whose stock would have otherwise headed for landfill – at the same time offering customers 70% off their usual weekly shop.
